Volleyball Concussion Training: Extending Safety Standards for Sportime Coaches

Mount Sinai Provider Network

Following our successful concussion training sessions with Tri-State tennis coaches earlier this season, the team at Concussion Management of New York (CM of NY) hit the road again to expand our safety education initiatives.

This time, our mission brought us back to Sportime—specifically at their premier Long Island facility (Sportime VBC)—to deliver comprehensive volleyball concussion training for their coaching staff.

While the sport on the court shifted from rackets to volleyballs, our core objective remained identical: empowering coaches with clinical knowledge and actionable tools to protect youth and club athletes from head trauma.

Why Volleyball Concussion Training Matters for Club Safety

When people discuss sports-related concussions, high-impact collision sports like football or hockey usually dominate the conversation. However, court sports like volleyball carry distinct head injury risks that coaches and staff must be equipped to manage.

High-velocity spikes, rapid court movements, accidental collisions during diving plays, and hard floor impacts all present real risks for head injuries. For student-athletes, an unmanaged concussion can impact academic performance, delay recovery, and compromise long-term neurological health.

By delivering dedicated volleyball concussion training alongside leading multi-sport facilities like Sportime, CM of NY helps embed clinical-grade safety protocols directly into club operations, ensuring player safety remains a top priority across all athletic programs.

Inside the Session: Clinical Education Meets Coaching Accountability

Led by founder Dr. Alex Gometz, the educational session provided a practical framework tailored specifically for on-court athletic situations:

  • Recognizing Concussion Symptoms: Identifying non-obvious physical, cognitive, and behavioral signs of a head injury.
  • Immediate On-Court Protocol: Taking swift, appropriate steps when a player experiences a suspected head impact during practice or competition.
  • Modern Recovery Strategies: Dispelling outdated myths regarding prolonged dark-room rest and discussing active, evidence-based rehabilitation protocols.

To translate this training into real-world accountability, every participating coach completed a post-presentation certification quiz. Passing the evaluation ensured each coach earned their certification and gained the confidence needed to make informed safety decisions on the sidelines.

Expanding Concussion Safety Across the Tri-State Area

Protecting young athletes requires consistent safety standards across every sport and facility. The engagement and commitment shown by the Sportime volleyball coaching staff reflect a shared vision for safer youth athletics across New York.

Whether on the tennis court, volleyball floor, or at local schools and sports clubs throughout the region, Concussion Management of New York remains dedicated to bridging the gap between specialized neurological care and everyday athletic programs.
