General Understanding
A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) that temporarily disrupts normal brain function. It can cause chemical changes and affect brain cell communication.
Concussions commonly result from falls, sports injuries, car accidents, or direct blows to the head, causing the brain to move rapidly inside the skull.
Symptoms include headache, dizziness, confusion, nausea, memory issues, difficulty concentrating, blurred vision, and sensitivity to light or noise.
Even though symptoms can improve within 2 to 4 weeks, some people experience prolonged effects lasting months (post-concussion syndrome). It’s best to get a comprehensive evaluation as soon as possible and completely resolve all symptoms quickly to reduce the risk of lasting effects.
Mild concussions have short-lived symptoms without loss of consciousness. Moderate concussions involve more persistent symptoms. Severe concussions may cause prolonged cognitive issues and require extended recovery. All types of concussions benefit from treatment. Mild concussions may only require a few treatments and more severe concussions may require more.
It’s generally not recommended to fly with a concussion, especially within the first few days, as altitude changes can worsen symptoms like headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Always consult a concussion specialist before flying.
Diagnosis and Immediate Care
A concussion specialist assesses symptoms, medical history, and performs specific tests to determine abnormality and determine the type of concussion to improve specificity on treatment procedures. CMNY performs objective tests to improve outcomes of the various treatments offered. CMNY tests long-term results. Escalations to other specialties and experts in our group are sometimes needed and practiced.
Remove the person from activity, check for symptoms, keep them awake for observation, and seek medical evaluation.
Immediately seek medical care at the ER or contact your physician.
Not usually, since concussions don’t show on standard scans. Imaging is only used to check for bleeding or swelling in severe cases.
Untreated concussions can lead to prolonged symptoms, increased risk of future concussions, brain swelling, or in rare cases, second-impact syndrome, which can be fatal.
Treatment and Recovery
After a proper evaluation at a concussion specialist, follow the specific recommendations provided. A good rule of thumb is to rest both physically and mentally, avoid screens and bright lights, stay hydrated, get proper nutrition, and gradually reintroduce activities under medical supervision.
It depends on the type of concussion and there is a need to seek medical advice because each concussion should be independently evaluated.
Yes, if it’s properly evaluated by a medical provider. Don’t make decisions on your own about a head injury that you may not understand.
Very important. Keep good hydration and a diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods.
Returning to Normal Activities
Return should be gradual, based on symptoms. School or work can resume with accommodations provided by a concussion specialist, but sports should be avoided until fully cleared by a concussion specialist.
Recovery is going well if symptoms gradually decrease. If symptoms persist for weeks or worsen, medical follow-up is needed to check for post-concussion syndrome.
Yes, a concussion specialist team designs a customized program based on the results from the comprehensive evaluation. Each concussion is different and requires a customized plan of recovery that should be monitored until full recovery and discharge.
Repeated concussions can lead to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), cognitive impairment, mood disorders, and increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases.
Wear protective gear, use proper techniques in sports, avoid risky falls, strengthen neck muscles, and follow safety rules in physical activities.
Concussion Baseline Testing
Everyone should have a baseline assessment which is a series of different tests taken to determine brain function in different systems in a “normal state.” The data from the baseline tests results can be used to compare with the data after a head injury to determine the level of impact compared to the previous “normal state.”
